EVENT HISTORY
Barefoot in the Park is a result of what happens when a diverse group of community leaders get together to jumpstart a regional arts initiative. In 2004, community leaders Caryn McGarity (Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau); Doug Spohn, City of Duluth Mayor Shirley Lasseter and local Duluth business owners Cindy and Randy Sutt all strongly felt the need for increased arts awareness in Gwinnett, and felt that a high quality juried arts festival would be the ideal forum to showcase Gwinnett artists, as well as other local and regional artists. After much discussion, plans were begun for the first ever “Barefoot in the Park” festival, held in the Duluth Town Green. In its first year, the festival was named “Best Downtown Special Event 2005” in the statewide Georgia Downtown Awards Competition.
