David spent most of the day Saturday going from booth to booth talking to the artists at length to hear their story and understand their passion. David later confessed to Caryn McGarity, Barefoot executive director, “that this was one of the hardest decisions of my life, the caliber of artists at the festival is outstanding.”

Awards were handed out this evening at the Artist Reception on the Town Green after the festival closed for the day. It was a chance for the artists, sponsors and volunteers to go barefoot and enjoy the amazing weekend we are having.

2012 Highlight Artist: Sara Westermark

Specialty: Jewelry

Bio:

My work graphically represents my life. I have come to see my striving for the “perfect and happy” life as a clean form, and all the divergent paths and unexpected detours as the cutting away or crumbling of the original form. It is the acceptance of life as it comes–usually messy, unpredictable, and tragic–can lead to a new kind of beauty with richness and depth that only wisdom of experience can afford. I only now have words to describe this part of my experience that has been in my work for some time mostly because forms and shapes come more easily to me than words. I celebrate life in its chaos, juxtaposed with the eternal striving for order. Those universal themes are what resonate so sweetly to me when I work.

2012 Highlight Artist: Maggie Joynt

Specialty: Jewelry

Bio:

Maggie Joynt holds a Bachelor of Arts in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from Illinois State University, where she graduated magna cum laude. She currently lives in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina which provide continuous inspiration for her work. Her studio and gallery, Maggie J’s Jewelry, is located at the Riverwood Shops in historic Dillsboro, NC.

“I have always found beauty in unexpected places, such as the surface of the rocks outside my studio, or the frayed wings of a well-traveled butterfly. Texture plays a big part in my work, and I love finding new ways to create patterns and designs on the metal. Carving my own designs into hammers to use directly on the metal makes fun, random, and earthy designs. My favorite is using various materials including leaves, paper, insect wings, and fabrics to press patterns and textures directly onto sterling and copper. This process preserves the delicate texture directly onto the metal. These abstract, organic, and textural elements continue to be evident in my work.”

2012 Highlight Artist: Tanya Leslie

Specialty: Ceramics

Bio:

I studied at Colorado Insitute of Art, Penland under several artists. I currently live in the hills of Virginia, south of Roanoke, and have been throwing clay for around 12years as a living. Everything I create is Hand Thrown, Hand altered, and Hand made, no two are ever a like. I make my own glazes and some of my own clay. I recently fell in love with Raku, because I love not knowing what your going to get! Between the colors and the cracks…Each piece has its own story.

Example of work:

2012 Highlight Artist: Jan Morrison

Specialty: Mixed Media

Bio:

A longtime resident of Georgia, I received my fine arts education from the University of West Georgia. Trained in printmaking, my exposure to drawing with pen and ink began a 30 year experience exploring drawing with black ink, specifically stippling or pointillism.

A few years ago, as the result of an eye disease, I lost the ability to continue to execute my precise detailed pointillism drawings. I now direct my creative energy to an exciting mixed media art form that I refer to as 3 dimensional canvas with limitless possibilities. Gourds.

Gourd specimens have been unearthed dating back 10,000 years. You can easily recognize that ancient and modern pottery mimics the shapes of the various shapes and sizes of gourds. They have been used for vessels, musical instruments, masks and many other applications. I cut, carve, paint, inlay stones and embellish with leather or ink dyes, waxes and gold leaf. The rims can be coiled with waxed Irish linen thread, pine needles and natural materials.

I also utilize metals, wood, driftwood, beads and handmade paper. The shape and size of the gourd determines the design and treatments.

2012 Highlight Artist: Charles Pinckney

Specialty: Jewlery

Bio:

I am a metal smith working in the medium of jewelry and wearable sculpture. My designs are a composition of abstract shapes, color, positive and negative space, gestural lines, texture and movement. I fabricate jewelry from sterling, titanium, 14 K gold, copper, bronze, semi-precious stones and found objects. Techniques that I use include hot and cold connections, forging, piercing, lamination of metal layers, metal carving and fabrication of custom hinges, bezels and clasps.

As I work on the construction of a piece, that piece becomes a reservoir of memories from my youth. I often share those memories with my viewers, passing on my oral history. This allows a dialogue to unfold between us about similar life situations. I have been working in this manner for over 40 years and I am a member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths.

Barefoot in the Park Arts Festival celebrates all of the arts, and the performing arts are a big part of the event’s overall programming. Held in Duluth, Georgia’s beautiful Town Greene Park, Barefoot welcomes performers in two venues, The Festival Stage and the Second Stage.

The events’ Second Stage venue has become a place which showcases young performers. The first performer on the Second Stage on May 5th will be Jenna Bass, Miss Lilburn Idol, at noon. Young performers from the Gwinnett School of Music and the popular young band 38th Parallel are on board as well as the youth performers from The Actor’s Edge and the Sounds of Suwanee Jazz Ensemble. BAREFOOT IN THE PARK ARTS FESTIVAL

CELEBRATES ITS 8TH YEAR

MAY 4-6, 2012 IN DULUTH TOWN GREEN

Barefoot in the Park Arts Festival announces their 8th year of bringing arts, food, and fun for all ages to the Duluth Town Green on May 4, 5, and 6. This popular regional arts festival welcomed approximately 15,000 attendees last year, a record number. This year, there will be even more to see and experience.

Approximately100 tents containing fine artwork of artists from across the Southeast and beyond will vie with a continuous schedule of musicians and dancers for visitor’s attention. A Children’s Art Tent, a Book Bistro, an Adult Learning Village, a Wine Tasting, and a Student Exhibition of artwork from Gwinnett schools. Organizers are diligently working on fine tuning these events and more.

Focus is being placed on two special components of Barefoot in the Park during these early planning days. The first piece of good news is that the Barefoot Gala is returning after a hiatus of 2 years. Held on Friday, May 4th beginning at 6:30 p.m., this year’s return will be titled “Carnevale,” featuring decorations and entertainment from the joyous Italian festival tradition. During the Gala, there will be special events, one being the 2nd “Paper Dress Fashion Show.” This fashion event will showcase glamorous outfits made from repurposed books and magazines from the Gwinnett Public Library.

The Gala will also feature fine food, wine and exciting  performances, but it is the silent auction during the Gala that contributes to the second special component of the Barefoot Festival, its Scholarship Program.

The Barefoot in the Park Arts Festival Scholarship Program has awarded over $43,000 to area arts and educational organizations since the festival began. Money made through the Gala’s Silent Auction and other income is put back into the community to ensure that Gwinnett’s artists and students have what they need to thrive.

Last year’s recipients were Aurora Theatre, Community Foundation of Northeast Georgia, Georgia Gwinnett College Foundation, Gwinnett Ballet Theatre, Hudgens Center for the Arts, and the Jay Shapiro Arts Education Scholarship. The total amount given last year to these groups was $11,000.

Barefoot’s Executive Director Caryn McGarity says, “Our Festival is fun for the many families and individuals who attend. They get to see and do so much! But there is another reason we work so hard to create this exciting event. Giving back to our area arts organizations is one of our primary goals, which we do through our Scholarship Program. As a fellow non-profit organization, Barefoot in the Park feels the responsibility to support what it also showcases to the community-our arts.”

Scholarship application forms will be available soon, and a separate alert will be sent to the media. Exciting details about artists, performers, writers, and other Barefoot events will also be announced as they are finalized. Watch for these details on our web site, www.barefootinthepark.org and be sure to join our Facebook Fanpage at http://www.facebook.com/#!/barefootinthepark10.  You may also write info@barefootinthepark.org or call 678-6770172.
